Your in the same position I was at in 2010 when I first started my journey into understanding this strange new business idea of grill cleaning. Who even pays someone to clean their grill and why would they need their grill cleaned right?
Back in 2010 I had to clean my own grill, it was a miserable experience. I wasted a whole day cleaning my grill. You can read about my experience in detail (here). I spent hours upon back breaking hours scraping and scrubbing just to finally give up in shear agony.
I called it quits!
You know what?
The grill only looked marginally better than it did when I started. I was sun burnt, miserable and felt defeated.
I swore I would never clean my grill again!
But, here I am, a seasoned business owner with a decade in the business.
What My Journey Taught Me
Back when I started my journey (I sound like an old man! “Back in my day, I had to clean the grill with my fingernails…You kids these days…”)
I digress…Back in 2010, there were little to no resources available. It was simply too new of a service. In fact, my first introduction to the grill cleaning industry was an ad from someone selling a “Business Opportunity” in a Small Business Opportunities magazine. This was literally the next day after going thru the miserable experience cleaning my grill. My wife and I went to the grocery store to do our weekly shopping trip. I was tired, beat up and exhausted! I stood in the magazine isle going up and down the rack flipping thru every magazine till my wife came and found me. I recall flipping thru the pages of a Small Business Opportunities magazine and came across this ad. I said out loud to myself “I didn’t know that service even existed! I could have used that service yesterday.”
It was such a coincidence that I happened to see that ad the day after I cleaned my grill. If I hadn’t cleaned my grill and still saw that ad, I probably would have kept flipping the pages and thought nothing of it.
I wasn’t in the mindset to start a business at that time, especially not one cleaning grills with the experience I just went thru. I was happy at my current employment but the ad intrigued me so much that I felt compelled to call.
I got the pie-in-the-sky standard sales pitch. The business was “Booming!”, “Little to no competition”, “Be the first in your area”, and “Everyone with a grill in their backyard is a potential customer”.
It sounded like a can’t lose business opportunity. What I wasn’t sold on though, and couldn’t get my mind to wrap around was the fact that my grill was so damn difficult to clean and I didn’t want to go thru that process on someone elses grill.
How did this service make cleaning grills easier than what I just went thru?
I didn’t get that answer and decided I was not ready to own a Grill Cleaning business at that time!
It took me two years afterwards to finally come around and decide to start my business.
Why Would I Give All This Information Away?
Simply…To pay it forward.
You see, when I first started my journey, there were not a lot of grill cleaners around the country. In fact, there were more grill cleaners overseas in the UK and Australia than there were here in the US.
I called and reached out to a lot of US based cleaners, just like you are doing now. I either never received a reply back or if I did speak to someone, they were very ambiguous and secretive about what they do and what they use. It felt like this was some secret society that only a select few could know about.
I had better luck speaking to a few businesses in the UK than I did here locally. What I found, were those individuals in the UK were not only happy to speak to me but were gracious with their time. They wanted to speak to me and give me their suggestions. They had nothing to hide.
I still speak to those individuals to this day.
Beyond that, I have a true passion for this business…this industry!
I LOVE this business and the opportunity it brings me and my family. This might sound corny but it’s the truth. Since I went full time in this business, I have a less stress and I’ve not had to woken to the sound of an alarm clock once.
I can’t truly say that I’m stress-free, but the type of stress I deal with now is nothing compared to what I was under working for someone else. In comparison, I would consider myself stress-free!
So, selfishly, I want to see this industry grow and blossom and I don’t want to see it turn into a cut-throat, price sensitive commodity like so many home services out there.
Having a grill cleaning business not only can provide a high value service to our customers but will also provide a high value business for our families. One that has great growth potential and endless future possibilities.
You might just be learning of this industry. I am already thinking towards the future of this industry. What it can be. What it can grow and morph into. By helping others get into this business and learning how to build high value, high growth businesses, than just maybe I can bring some high moral character individuals who have a vested interest in growing and elevating this industry along with me?

Grill cleaning is hard and dirty work!
Grill cleaning is not “sexy”. When I tell someone who asks what I do, they give me a blank stare like they are trying to process what I just said. No one understands what we do. In their mind, they think you’re using a wire scrub brush hanging off the side of the grill and trying to comprehend why someone would be so lazy and need to pay you to do that. And…how can you afford to pay your bills. If you were a carpet cleaner, a window cleaner, landscaper or a maid, they could carry a conversation with you. The conversation around grill cleaning tends to be pretty short because they just don’t know what to say or ask.
