What Happens If You Don’t Clean Your Grill?

Rusty and Crusty are experts when it comes to this subject. They were used and thrown in the dump when they got too dirty because their owners didn’t want to clean and care for them. They understand more so than anyone else the importance of cleaning and maintaining your grill.

What happened to them when they weren’t cleaned and cared for? What changes started to happen and ultimately took a toll on them?

Let’s find out.

A lack of cleaning your grill is actually doing more harm than good.

Major Problems And Breakdowns

In all the years we’ve been cleaning grills we’ve certainly seen our fair share of grills that have been down right disgusting and practically destroyed due to neglect. These grills are always harder to clean and in the end take a lot longer to clean. While they are cleaner than when we started, they are not the best cleaning.

Let’s break the grill down to see what damage occurs.

Exterior:

  1. Damage to stainless or painted surfaces – Grease and liquid stains left on the exterior, especially from acidic and sugary marinades and glazes will harden. If these are not wiped up it might require the use of scraping tools and/or heavy rubbing which might dull or remove a painted finish or cause damage to the stainless steel finish.
  2. Hardened grease will begin to eat away at the finish and cause the surface to begin to rust.
  3. Grease and juices from marinades, especially sugary marinades will be like a dinner bell to bugs, mice and other critters.

Interior:

  1. Grates begin to break down and rust if grease and carbon are left on them. The acids and sugars in the marinades and glazes begin to eat away at the coating or surface of the grates and will begin to deteriorate them till they begin to rust.
  2. Too much debris on the bottom of the grill will affect your burners. We’ve seen to many grills where we were called to clean them because the grill didn’t heat properly just to find the amount of debris built up was covering the holes in the burners and not allowing the flame to rise.
  3. Like the grates, the acids and marinades will eat away at the burners eventually causing large holes.
  4. Heat plates, briquettes and flavorizer bars all will begin to rust and corrode.
  5. Built up grease on flavorizer bars will cause flare-ups and grease fires.
  6. Grilling your food on the left over carbon from who knows when and what is a known carcinogen you are transferring to your food.
  7. Your food will begin to taste funny.
  8. Can’t tell you how many times we walk up to a grill, open the cabinet doors and the cabinet bottom is caked in grease that overflowed the drip tray and catch pan. This grease can and will ooze out onto your patio or deck and stain it. These stains are nearly impossible to remove once they’ve been sitting for a while.
  9. Mold will begin to develop on the grates and grease catch pan.

Not cleaning your grill is actually doing more harm than good. Your grill is probably more unsanitary than your toilet?

Problems Persist

As mentioned. we’ve seen our fair share of nasty, uncared for grills. A few things they all have in common are:

  • The grills look aged/older than they really are
  • Problems the homeowners are experiencing in most cases are all related to a lack of maintenance and cleaning.
  • They are always more difficult to clean – in some cases the best thing to do is buy a new one.
  • While mice and other rodents can happen in a clean grill, bug and rodent droppings tend to be more prominent in the really dirty grills. When we clean, we literally can smell the urine from mice – Trust me when I say “That’s disgusting!”

No matter how much you paid for your grill, you made an investment into that grill. Yes, some grills are considered “Throw away” grills because they are cheap and made with inexpensive materials. These grills are naturally tough to clean. Depending on how dirty the grill is and the amount of time it’ll take to clean, maybe it’s just best to purchase a new one?

If you think about it, when you leave food chuncks, carbon and grease inside your grill you’re promoting an environment for bacteria and mold growth. No matter how long you burn the grill do you really want to grill food on a grill that has been harboring mold and bacteria?

You at least take the time to clean your toilet don’t you?

Have you ever considered that your dirty grill might be more unsanitary than your toilet just because you believe “burning it off” somehow cleans the grill efficiently enough?

You would call me a bunch of names and question my sanity if I said you just need to flush your toilet over and over for 30 min to remove all the feces and bacteria in your toilet and it’ll be good enough to eat off of.

That’s a wild comparison but I think you understand my point?
